With older washing machines, it was not a good idea to put your shoes in a washer at home. Today’s machines are much more advanced and can handle it now. Older models were too harsh on items like shoes and could ruin them. Today, appliances offer many more upgraded options and features that allow you to clean your shoes in a washing machine safely.
While it is possible to clean your shoes in the washer, we don’t advise you to take them off your feet as is and throw them into a regular load of clothes. There is a step-by-step process that you’ll need to follow for your shoes to come out clean and in good shape and not to destroy your machine, shoes, or other clothes in the process.
Prior to you putting your shoes in a washing machine, you’ll need to gather these tools to help:
1. Shoe Preparation
A washing machine is built to clean stains and normal levels of dirt. Heavily soiled shoes with heavy dirt and caked-on mud need more help. It is recommended to use a soft-bristled brush such as an old toothbrush to remove excess dirt and mud.
Remove any insoles and laces from your shoes. Put the laces into a wash bag or pillowcase to avoid tangling and wrapping around anything. The insoles need to be manually cleaned, so do not include them in the washing machine.
The night before running a load washing your shoes, use a small amount of baking soda in each shoe. This will improve the odor and cleaning. Wash the baking soda off manually before putting it in the appliance.
2. Put Shoes in Washing Machine
Shoes can damage your wash drum. That is why we recommend putting them into a wash bag or pillowcase to protect them from getting caught on the drum. To reduce the loud noise, wrap your shoes in the same color towel and put in wash bag or pillowcase.
If you have a top-loading wash machine, put your shoe in the very bottom first and then cover with towels.
With the newer appliances, there are multiple settings you can choose from for your shoes to be in good shape and come out sparkling clean.
In order for your shoes to come out clean and in good shape, select the proper wash settings. Make sure to use a liquid detergent instead of powdered.
Here are the recommended wash cycle settings:
Can you put your shoes in the dryer? The answer is yes, with conditions.
Putting shoes in a dryer can cause the soles to warp. Put a towel wrapped around your shoes to reduce their exposure to intense heat. Use the delicate, low-heat cycle.
